So does it need to be exactly 160px wide by 70px tall? The bands that I have added pics for I did one or the other cus when I did both it wouldn't look right. I think for all the Seattle bands that I have taped I will try to get a band logo/image added for them.

No, it doesn't. But since that image appears in two places - the "browse all bands" page and the top nav bar of the band's collection - it needs to do two jobs at once, and should be appropriately sized and proportioned.

Any image SMALLER than 160px will be stretched to 160px wide on the "browse all bands" page. This will also cause the image to be stretched vertically. Compare, say, the image for "The Fall Risk". Looks good here: http://www.archive.org/details/TheFallRisk
Looks like crap here:
http://www.archive.org/browse.php?collection=etree&;field=%2Fmetadata%2Fcreator

Any image LARGER than 160px will be shrunk down to 160px wide, and will be correspondingly smaller vertically. Compare Blue Turtle Seduction. Looks good here: http://www.archive.org/details/BlueTurtleSeduction
Looks tiny here:
http://www.archive.org/browse.php?collection=etree&;field=%2Fmetadata%2Fcreator

So 160px is really the sweet spot for image width if you can swing it.

For image height, the default image of the Internet Archive (at top right) is 70px high. The LMA llama is 71px high. Anything much larger than that is going to cause the IA image to float up in the middle of nowhere. See here:
http://www.archive.org/details/HalfStep
http://www.archive.org/details/SmashingPumpkins
http://www.archive.org/details/JohnMayerMusic
etc.

So I typically ask for less than 100px high if possible.

And there you have it...my treatise on collection header image sizing. :)

The easiest way to get around this is to put images on a white 160x70 background.

So for instance, the archive logo at the top of the page is 84x70, and would get blown up about 2x on the artist browse page to 160 wide.

But if you have a squarish logo, you can preserve the size of it by putting it on a white background:

logo on white background
logo on blue background (to illustrate - this would look terrible if you did it for real)
